The Ukrainian flag (Ukrainian: Державний Прапор України) is a two-color flag with blue on the top and yellow on the bottom, with an aspect ratio of 2:3. Blue represents the sky and sea, symbolizing freedom and sovereignty; yellow represents wheat fields, symbolizing Ukraine’s long agricultural history. Yellow and blue are the traditional colors of Ukraine, derived from the country’s blue shield and yellow lion emblem.
This flag was originally the national flag of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, a short-lived regime established in 1918, but it was strictly banned during the Soviet era and was replaced by the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic flag. On August 24, 1991, with the independence of the three Baltic countries from the Soviet Union, the Ukrainian Supreme Soviet issued a declaration of national independence, breaking away from Soviet rule, and the blue and yellow national flag was restored. On January 28, 1992, the aspect ratio of the Ukrainian flag was changed from 1:2 to 2:3. In 2006, the color of the flag was slightly adjusted to a darker color.
